You’re starting to come to the end of the Shores of Gold Arc in Sea of Thieves when you take on the Fate of the Morningstar Tall Tale. You’ve explored countless islands, sailed over countless seas, and raided several ancient vaults. This tale however takes you away from the sun-drenched coasts and jungles and into the ethereal strangeness that you’ve also encountered before. This tall tale takes you to the Ferryman.
Like the other Tall Tales it is recommended that you do not undertake such a voyage by yourself. Although the Fate of the Ferryman voyage is smaller in scale than some of the others there are plenty of dangers to be encountered and it is best not to go alone.
How To Begin The Fate Of The Morningstar Tall Tale
The Ferryman in Sea of Thieves
To take on the Fate of the Morningstar Tall Tale you must have done the previous tales in this arc, starting with the Shroudbreaker that can be found by the Mysterious Stranger in any of the taverns at any outpost.
Unlike every other Tall Tale you’ve done or will do, this one cannot be started anywhere on the typical game map. Instead, you can find the Tall Tale Voyage Book next to the Ferryman on the Ferry of the Damned. Reaching him is simple and can be done from more or less anywhere in the game. All you have to do is die.

Once you’ve made your way to the Ferry by whatever means you choose (jumping from the crow's nest, drowning, or firebombs are the easiest to achieve at an outpost), find the book and make sure that over half your crew vote for the voyage to begin the Tall Tale. That means on a full crew at least three will have to make their way to the ferry to begin the adventure.
After you’ve begun the voyage, the Ferryman will hint at his tale of woe and send you on a quest to save some trapped souls, since you did such a good job rescuing Rose and George.
How To Find The Ferryman's Lantern In The Fate Of The Morningstar Tall Tale
The Sarcophagus in Sea of Thieves
The first pages of the ledger the Ferryman gave you will tell you where to go first. Before you can save these souls you’ll have to find his lantern which is able to reveal the spirit world to mortal eyes, which he kept with his body after he died.
The ledger is clear about where to go and will direct you to either Marauder’s Arch or Kraken’s Fall. Once you’ve arrived on whichever of these gloomy isles, you’ll have to venture to the highest peak and seek out the ominous-looking tree there to dig under.
Unearth the Sarcophagus of the Ferryman and open to find his earthly remains, and the lantern. You’ll have a chance to experiment with the lantern now, which you can find in your quest item inventory. Hold it high and you should find some footprints left behind that lead you to the story of the Ferryman’s last moments.
With this in hand, you’ll have to head to the second island mentioned on the ledger, which can either be Kraken’s Fall or Old Faithful Isle. On the island, you’ll have to retrace the final moment of three pirates and their killers to find their lost souls trapped in hidden chests, and the keys to set them free.
How To Free The Soul of Dingeron Kraken’s FallIn The Fate Of The Morningstar Tall Tale
Begin your search for the lost souls on the shores of Kraken’s Fall and you should come across the ghostly remnants of the skeleton attack, as long as you have the Ferryman’s Lantern raised high. Arriving by rowboat heavily loaded with three chests you should see several skeletons as well as the Skeleton Lord Graymarrow. Follow their attack to find the three victims, Dinger, Fontaine, and Eli. Each pirate fled in a different direction as they tried to escape their fate, so make note of the camp's location near the bay so you can return to follow the next journey when you’ve completed this one.
Dinger is the broadest of the three pirates, with an open coat and thick mustache. When he runs on Kraken’s Fall, he will be chased to the top of the arch that dominates the island before being blown off into the waters below. Follow him down and trace his steps until you find the ghostly remains of sight of his body on the southwestern edge of the water. From there you will see two skeletons splitting up, one taking the chest, one taking the key. You will need both to free his soul.

Follow the ghostly footprints of the key skeleton first as it climbs the high peaks of the island. At the submit, you will see the Skeleton place the key in the cannon and fire it into the open ocean. There is only one way of getting the key back now. Adjust the cannon so it matches the ghostly outline of the position the skeleton had then climb in yourself. Launch yourself at the same trajectory and you should see the key once you hit the water on a raised section of the seabed. Collect the key and return to the island.
Now return to where Dinger’s body was and begin following the skeleton with the chest who heads north. Keep following the footprints along to the north beach and you’ll soon find a skeleton burying the chest. Retrieve it from the ground and use the key to free Dinger’s soul.
How To Free The Soul of Fontaine on Kraken’s FallIn The Fate Of The Morningstar Tall Tale
The Ghostly Victims in Sea of Thieves
Like Dinger, Fontaine can be found at the starting camp fleeing from Graymarrow’s attack. You can recognize him by his curly hair and makeup. Unfortunately for him, he doesn’t make it far when chased, and his footprints will take you under the arch where you'll see him meeting his fate.
From here you will see the two skeletons collecting his soul. One heads north with the chest, and the other south with the key.
Follow the south leading footsteps first, which will lead to a small alcove with a caged skeleton suspended from the ceiling. Use the nearby lever to lower the cage and you’ll find the key inside. Afterwards head back to the body and follow the other footprints north.
It doesn’t travel too far and if you use the lantern to follow its footprints you’ll find the place it buried the chest in no time. Dig it up and use the key to open it and Fontaine’s soul will be freed.
How To Free The Soul of Eli on Kraken’s FallIn The Fate Of The Morningstar Tall Tale
The final pirate in need of saving is Eli, who can you begin to follow from the same camp as the others. Unlike Dinger and Fontaine, Eli is pursued by Graymarrow himself, and while he puts in a valiant effort, he is eventually slain like the others. Follow his footsteps up and over the arch to gain glimpses of the battle before his untimely end on the overhang above the central lagoon. Don't worry though, The Fate of the Morningstar Tall Tale doesn't have any combat encounters, except the random skeletons that spawn on the island, so you won't be fighting Graymarrow, yet.
Unlike the other souls, there aren't two sets of footprints to follow from this one. Instead, you’ll see one skeleton wander off with the key, and beside the other a large map of the island with an annoyingly large X drawn over it. That will lead to the chest, but first, let’s get the key.
Follow the footprints away from Eli’s body to see the skeleton throw the key off the ledge and into the lagoon below. Dive in yourself and you’ll find the key at the end of the throw. If you’re struggling be still and look for the glimmer of the key. Check in the seaweeds and plant life too as it might be hidden from view.
Now that you’ve got the key, you’ll only need the chest to free his soul, and you’re not too far from where the X is marked on the map. Swim out of the lagoon on the spit of land on the eastern side. From the beach continue east a few steps until you find some greenery just south of a large rock. Dig around there to uncover the chest and use the key to free Eli.
If you're struggling head to the ship and use the map table to get a better look at the shape of Kraken's Fall. The peninsula you're looking for has that distinctive boot shape on its southern coast and you can use that indent to help align your digging attempts.
How To Free The Soul of Dinger on Old Faithful IsleIn The Fate Of The Morningstar Tall Tale
If the ledger has taken you to Old Faithful island instead, you’ll find the setup quite similar to Kraken’s Fall. Graymarrow and his band of skeletons have arrived to imprison the souls of the Dinger, Fontaine, and Eli, who attempted to flee. You’ll have to follow their footprints with the lantern, and find where the skeletons hid the chest containing their soul and the key needed to open it.
Dinger, the barrel-shaped pirate with the open chest began his mad dash for freedom with Fontaine, but soon enough the two sets of tracks diverge. Keep following the southern prints to find Dinger’s fate. You’ll find it at the edge of a cliff where Dinger was cornered and thrown from.
Unfortunately, you’ll now have to find a way down there. Following his exact path is possible, but you’ll want full health to do it. Barring that just note the patch of sand he landed on and retrace your steps back down and try and find it. You know you’re there when you can his body surrounded by his two killers.

One of these skeletons will head to the coast to bury the chest, the other up the mountain to hide the key. Take the mountain path first and use the lantern to follow their steps. Eventually, you’ll find them placing the key inside a cannon. Adjust the cannon to match the ghostly outline and fire yourself into the ocean. If you’ve followed the same trajectory, the key should be nearby and you can spot it by watching its glimmering.
With the key in hand return to the coast and find the spot Dinger died to chase the chest. It won’t be far, so track the skeleton and dig where you see it burying the chest, then use the key to set Dinger free.
How To Free The Soul of Fontaine on Old Faithful IsleIn The Fate Of The Morningstar Tall Tale
A Freed Soul in Sea of Thieves
Go back and find where Fontaine and Dinger spilt up and this time follow the other footprints to find this pirate in his fancy hat and makeup. You’ll see Fontaine chased through the remnants of an old fort and this is where he will meet his fate. Once again, the skeletons will lock his soul in a chest and hide it and the key to avoid it being opened.
To begin with, they'll both go in the same direction, but like the pirates, will quickly spilt up. To find the key you want to follow the left-hand prints. These will lead to a campfire before ending rather abruptly. Look around the cliff wall however and you’ll find a lever. Pull that and you’ll see a cage descend near where the footprints ended. Inside is the key.
Now return to where the skeletons diverged and take a right. They’ll walk for a little bit but soon enough you’ll find the ghostly image of them burying the chest with your lantern. Unearth it and use the key to open it to free Fontaine from his fate.
How To Free The Soul of Eli on Old Faithful IsleIn The Fate Of The Morningstar Tall Tale
Finally, there is Eli. This brave pirate was pursued by Graymarrow himself and engaged him in a pitched running battle before falling before the obnoxiously large sword of the Skeleton Lord. Return to the original camp and follow the footprints that went off alone.
You’ll find him fallen in the fort structure, with a ghostly map drawn in the sand to instruct the skeletons where the chest should be buried. It's actually really close to where the map is painted. Just head to the other side of the fence and start digging, you should come straight across it.
The key on the other hand has been thrown into the waters. Follow the footprints to see where exactly the skeleton lobbed it from and jump in behind it. Search underwater for the key and use its glimmer to help you out. Once you’ve got it, bring it to the chest and free Eli’s soul by opening up the chest.
How To Complete In The Fate Of The Morningstar Tall Tale
Once you’ve freed the three souls on either Kraken’s Fall or Old Faithful Isle, all you have left to do is return to the Ferryman to complete your mission.
Find a suitable means of shuffling off this mortal coil and you’ll find the souls of Dinger, Fontaine, and Eli are now resting on the Ferry of the Damned. Head up to the helm to speak to the Ferryman and The Fate of the Morningstar will be completed and you can return once more to the land of the living, hopefully with your unguarded boat intact.
